About Us

You already know which photo it is.

It’s not the good one. It’s the slightly blurry one, taken on a Tuesday, where they’re looking at something just past the camera and their ears have gone soft.

That’s the one we want.

THE MOMENT

Every portrait we make starts the same way: someone opens their phone and scrolls back through four thousand pictures of the same animal.

You’d think it would take a while. It never does. People know the photo immediately. There’s always one — the one that caught something the others didn’t. The tilt of the head. The look they only give you. The thing your family recognises from across a room and nobody can quite put into words.

That’s the hard part of this job. Not making a picture of a dog. Making a picture of your dog.

A machine can draw a golden retriever. It cannot know that yours sits like that, or that one ear never quite went up, or that the grey came in around her mouth two winters ago and you love her more for it.

So a person looks. Every time.

MEET ELORA

The one who decides when it’s finished

PawtraitStory is two people. Elora Smith is the one you should know about.

She’s from California, lives in New York now, and shares that apartment with Bella, Daisy, Charlie and Max — two dogs, two cats, and no obvious hierarchy between them. She has been outnumbered by animals for most of her adult life and shows no interest in fixing it.

She also paints. Not for us — for herself, on evenings and weekends, the way other people run or garden. It’s the reason she notices things the rest of us don’t: that an eye is set two millimeters too wide, that a mouth is technically correct and completely wrong, that a portrait looks like a black lab rather than your black lab.

Every portrait goes past both founders before it prints. We argue about them — properly argue, sometimes for longer than the portrait took. On anything to do with how it looks, Elora wins. That’s not chivalry. It’s that she’s usually right, and we worked together long enough before this to stop pretending otherwise.

If your portrait arrives looking like your animal and not like a generic version of your animal’s breed, that’s her.

THE OTHER ONE

There’s a second founder. He built all of it and he’d rather not be on this page.

He does answer every email himself, though — which is the deal: he stays off the internet, you never talk to a chatbot. Always within 24 hours. Usually a lot faster.

HOW IT WORKS

You upload your photo. We make your portrait. Then we go looking for what’s wrong with it.

The set of the eyes. The width between them. Whether the expression is an expression or the expression. Small things. They’re the only things.

Then it comes to you — usually within one to three working days — and nothing goes near a printer until you’ve seen it and said it’s right.

If it isn’t right, tell us. We’ll change it. Then change it again. There’s no limit and no fee, because a portrait that’s nearly your pet is worse than no portrait at all.

If your photo won’t work, we’ll say so before we start and ask for another. That costs you nothing.

And if you change your mind before you approve it, you get everything back. All of it.

WHAT ARRIVES

A real wood frame. Shatterproof glazing. The hanging kit already in the box, so you’re not standing in the kitchen at nine at night looking for the right screw.

Free shipping on every order, tracked from the moment it leaves.

US orders are printed in the United States. Yours doesn’t cross an ocean to reach you.

Then it goes on a wall, and here’s the part nobody tells you: you stop seeing it. For about a week it’s the thing you look at every time you walk past. After that it just becomes part of the house.

That’s when it’s working.

WHY WE’RE SMALL

We could take more orders than we do.

We’d have to stop looking at them properly first — print whatever came out, ship it, move on. Plenty of places do exactly that, and you can tell.

So the limit on this business isn’t advertising or traffic. It’s how many portraits two people can genuinely sit with in a day. We’d rather run into that wall than move it dishonestly.

If we’re ever running behind, you’ll hear it from us. You won’t be left refreshing an order page wondering whether anything happened.

GIVING BACK

Every month, a share of that month’s orders goes to the Animal Best Friend Foundation.

We don’t publish a percentage. Some months we can give more than others, and we’d rather not be locked to a number that stops us.

Somewhere there’s an animal nobody has photographed four thousand times yet. That’s the point of it.
