About this portrait

A king pet portrait in the Royal Monarch style is the biggest statement in the collection: a heavy gold crown set with cabochon stones, a crimson mantle patterned in gold fleur-de-lis over a coat of chainmail, and an armoured gauntlet resting on the dragon-headed hilt of a sword.

Behind it the sky is grey and moving, which places the whole thing outdoors on some very cold morning rather than in a warm throne room. That choice is what stops the piece being cute. It is a medieval king who happens to be a doberman, and it is played entirely straight.

What a king pet portrait asks of your photo

More than the others, this style needs a photo with a level, direct gaze. The crown sits on the top of the head and the sword sits at the bottom of the frame, so the eyes have to hold the middle. A photo taken from above will not work here — get down to the animal’s height.

Dobermans, german shepherds, maine coons and any animal with strong angular features carry it best, because the chainmail and crown are hard shapes and they want hard shapes to answer them. Softer, rounder faces still work and produce a gentler, funnier result. Dark coats are excellent against the pale grey sky, and a king pet portrait is one of the few styles in the range where a black or very dark animal gains from the background instead of fighting it.

How your king pet portrait is made

Send one clear photo at eye level with light on the face and both eyes visible. The photo guide is worth two minutes before you upload, because this is the style where a poor angle shows most.

Your photo is generated in this style and then individually reviewed and refined by a person before anything is printed. Markings are matched to your photo, eye colour is corrected, and the crown is fitted to your animal’s actual head and ear position rather than dropped on top of it. You approve a proof, usually inside one to three working days, and nothing prints until you do. Revisions are free and there is no limit on them.

Sizes, framing and finish

Framed, canvas or digital download. Framed prints are 200gsm matte paper in a real pine frame with shatterproof plexiglass, hanging kit included, arriving four to six days after approval. Canvas is a slim 2cm stretched cotton-polyester blend, five to six days. Black framing is the natural match for the grey sky and crimson mantle.

Sizes are 8×12, 12×18, 16×24 and 24×36 inches. Buy this one big. It is the most detailed piece in the range — crown, chainmail, embroidery and sword hilt all compete for space — and below 12×18 the detail starts to close up. At 24×36 it is the single most impressive thing in the Royal & Regal collection. Free tracked shipping on every order.

Questions about this portrait

Is there a queen version of this king pet portrait?
Her Imperial Highness in the same collection is the closest equivalent, with a jewelled crown and a Tudor gown instead of armour.

Can two pets share one king pet portrait?
Yes, though this style is composed around a single central figure and is strongest with one animal.

Will the sword and armour look strange with a small dog?
Not at all — it is funnier, and the proportions are adjusted so the animal still owns the frame.

Is the digital file big enough to print myself?
The digital download is supplied at print resolution, suitable up to the largest size in the range.
